MANILA, Philippines -- Local pharmaceutical firm United Laboratories Inc. recently obtained approval of its TasteRite patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, company president and chief executive officer Carlos Ejercito said.

Ejercito said TasteRite technology was a result of extensive research by PediaTech, Unilab’s research and development arm dedicated to developing solutions in childcare.

Kennie Dee, Unilab senior vice president for R&D, said TasteRite was a taste-masking system that significantly reduced the inherent bitter taste of some medicines so that children taste the flavor and not the medicine.

“A 2003 survey shows that 77 percent of Filipino mothers agree that the unpleasant taste of some medicines is the major reason for the poor (prescription) compliance among children,” Dee said. With INQUIRER.net
