Indications |
Treatment of epilepsy. |
|
Dosage |
Adult 1st Day 300 mg, 2nd Day 300 mg bid, 3rd Day 300 mg tid.
Thereafter, increase dose in increments of 300 mg daily up to max 2-4 g daily.
Daily dose should be taken in 3 divided doses. Max dose interval: Not > 12 hr.
Children 6-12 1st Day 10 mg/kg body wt, 2nd Day 20 mg/kg body wt, 3rd Day 25-35 mg/kg body wt.
Maintenance: Children weighing 26-36 kg 900 mg daily, 37-50 kg 1200 mg daily.
Neuropathic pain Adult Titrate dose similar to treatment of epilepsy to a max of 1.8 g daily in 3
divided doses. |

Special Precautions |
History of psychotic illness, renal impairment. False +ve readings in some urinary protein test. |

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Somnolence, dizziness, ataxia & fatigue. Nystagmus, tremor, diplopia, ambylopia, pharyngitis,
dysarthia, wt gain, dyspepsia, amnesia, weakness, paresthesia, arthralgia, purpura,
leucopenia, anxiety & UTI. |

Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus
(teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or
studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the
potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. |
