Indications |
Used to reduce LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B & triglycerides & to increase HDL-cholesterol
in the management of hyperlipidemias, including primary hypercholesterolemia (type IIa),
mixed dyslipidemia (type IIb), hypertriglyceridemia (type IV). Also used in patients
with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. |

Dosage |
Initially, 5-10 mg at night, may be adjusted after 4 wk. Max: 40 mg once daily at night. |

Administration |
May be taken with or without food. |
|
Contraindications |
Patients w/ acute liver disease or unexplained persistent raised serum aminotransferase conc. Pregnancy. |
|
Special Precautions |
Monitor liver function. |
|
Adverse Drug Reactions |
GI disturbances, headache, skin rashes, dizziness, blurred vision & dysgeusia,
increase in serum aminotransferase conc & myopathy. |

Drug Interactions |
Immunosuppressive drugs, fibric acid derivatives & nicotinic acid. |
|
Pregnancy Category (US FDA) |
Category X: Studies in animals or human beings have demonstrated foetal abnormalities
or there is evidence of foetal risk based on human experience or both,
and the risk of the use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweighs any possible benefit.
The drug is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant. |
